06-29-11 As usual, there has been a lack of communication on my part. We're moving to Boston next week! What this means for you: new recordings (finally!) within a few weeks. There is a challege that I challenged myself at the beginning of the year, to write and record 100 songs, which I will be taking a second stab at in the coming months. Due to the decreased length of the remainder of the year, this challenge, I feel, may end up being more challenging than previously thought. I'm still confident that I can make this happen. I will do my best to keep the status of the project current.
In other news, Emily Peal's new record Tunneling will be released on iTunes and bandcamp on Friday. We (as I am the guitar player for Emily Peal) are celebrating this with a show at the Frost Gallery in Brooklyn. This show is going to be amazing.
I'm getting distracted by other things, so I'll write again later.
04-13-11 New shows.
04-10-11 Today, Whispering Earth is six months old! That means that for the next week you can download it for free at bandcamp.com! Also, there are some new shows in the works, so come back later to see verification! That's it.
04-01-11 Happy April everyone. Just a quick little update. Stars Regardless will be releasing two EPs this month. Woohoo. Secondly, Emily Peal, which is, for those of you who don't know, the other band I work with, have just finished our latest recording. It goes to mastering at the end of the month, and it will blow your fucking mind. If you haven't heard our old EPs, click on that name. Emily Peal. This new record is much more mature than the previous two releases, and is sure to make your head spin. Remember what happened with Aang and Firelord Ozai at the end, and you were like, "Wait... Whaaaaaa? He can DO that???" That's what this is. Speaking of Emily Peal, I have the amazing opportunity to play an acoustic show at TT the Bear's Place in Cambridge, MA with Emily on May 20. You should probably come to that. I think you'll like it. A lot.
03-24-11 Okay, okay. You've got me. I don't update this enough. Well, here's some news for you. First, 2011 has been set as the YEAR OF 100 SONGS. Basically, this means that we're going to write, record, and release one hundred pieces of music. I say pieces because they're not all songs; this is a year of growth for us, so we'll be doing a lot of things differently. There will still be rock music, and there will still be folk music, but there is much, much more. To ease the pain a bit, we'll be releasing the first two EPs of the year simultaneously; one of songs--wonderful, glorious songs that you won't be able to clear from your heads--and one of noise. The second EP is comprised of what we're calling "arbitrary music", which to us means that the process is much more important than the result. Honestly, composers and avant garde musicians and jazz guys and experimentalists have been doing this for decades, but its time for us to do the same. No release dates yet, but we'll keep you posted. Also, new shows, so yeah.
10-10-10 Whispering Earth is officially released both physically and digitally on bandcamp. We had our first show of tour Friday night at Pete's Candy Store, and it was really great. If you happen to be in town for any of the other shows, please come on over and check it out. Tour dates are up on the Shows page. That's it for now!
10-01-10 Well, happy October everyone! This fall is already shaping up to be something really special. My bones know it, my skin knows it, heck my brain even has an inkling. In other news, Whispering Earth will be in my hands TODAY, and yours in ONE WEEK. Get excited to get excited! One week is also the start of the Stars Regardless / Little Red Lung "Unicycling Circus Bears" tour. I'm really looking forward to it. I'll be keeping a tour journal throughout the two weeks, which I will then post online for everyone to see and read. Also to look forward to are a handful of EPs to be released after this tour, with enough new songs to keep you satisfied for at least a little while. Check it out!
09-14-10 Its been awhile, but good things are happening! Whispering Earth is at the CD-making store on its way to be copied a billion times, and I'm so excited for you to see the whole thing. The cover has been splattered all over facebook and myspace like a tornado in a confetti factory, but the rest of the art is equally incredible. Little Red Lung and I are going on tour starting October 8th. We've got most of the dates confirmed, and I'll be adding them to the shows section of the site in the coming days.
07-13-10 Here's the situation: Whispering Earth is not finished yet. I ended up going to Europe with Emily and I wasn't able to get it done before we left, which is good because now that I've had some time from it I can look at everything a lot more clearly, which means that it will be better. I keep saying its almost done. You get the idea. Also, this October is going to be the first semi-national Stars Regardless tour! It is currently being booked. I'll be touring with one of my favorite bands, Little Red Lung from October 8th to October 23rd. I'll post dates as soon as they get confirmed. Also, I'm going to be in Boston, playing an acoustic set at Cafe Luna on Friday, July 30. It's gonna be cool. That's it I guess.
04-29-10 I realize that I don't update this very regularly. I think that is fine, because I doubt anyone actually visits this page. Regardless of that little detail, here is what's happening: Whispering Earth is almost finished. I'll be scrambling to get it wrapped up in the next few days, so that I can take it to get mastered in August. Zoe put together the album art, which looks absolutely incredible. I'm having a very difficult time keeping it to myself. In about a week and a half, Emily and I are going to Europe. We'll be spending six weeks in southern France and Italy, working on farms, and generally not being in America. Before we leave, Stars Regardless has one more show, on the evening of Berklee's graduation. My new band (Annie Hoffman, Adam Hand, and Emily Peal) will be playing, and I'll be playing with Emily's band. It should be a good time. I'll put up a show flier if they're making one. I think that's it. I might not put anything up before I leave, so that's that. Look for an updated site once I return, and hopefully more shows.
03-09-10 The Fallen Oaks record is finished. It'll be posted on bandcamp by the end of the week, assuming I get the discs I've ordered. Hopefully its something else for your enjoyment. I've been having some trouble reinstalling Logic, which I think my finally be taken care of, so maybe that will lead to Whispering Earth being finished sooner rather than later. I'll keep this website updated regarding that.
02-22-10 One of my EPs from last summer is done! Please Come Down is done, and when I wake up, you'll be able to find it on the internet at starsregardless.bandcamp.com to listen to or download for your enjoyment. I think this is a really magical piece of work, mainly because of the amazing musicians who shaped this into its current form. Emily Peal singing, Erin Craig playing keyboards, and Jordan Alegant playing bass, along with the engineering talents of Marie Kim and mastering mastery of Aaron Bastonelli turned Please Come Down into the most collaborative work Stars Regardless has ever engaged in. I can't wait for you to hear it. Also, Stars Regardless is a Knoxville-based band for only two more days. We'll be settling soon in the Boston area, then maybe somewhere else. Maybe not. I'll keep you posted.
02-05-10 Here's an awkward situation: two of the EPs I recorded in June are finished. Actually positively finished. Unfortunately, the art for one and the audio for another is in a box somewhere in Everett, MA. This means that hopefully by the 4th or 5th of March I'll have the capability to release two records. The Fallen Oaks record "Here Lie" (coincidentally the first and probably last) and one entitled Please Come Down. They're both really special in their own ways In other news, we're going to be playing tomorrow night on WDVX. Accompanied by special guests Zoe and ALL OF SENRYU, this show is going to rock, in a very acoustic, gentle way. We're on midnight to 4 (Sunday morning, technically) on 102.9 FM (Knoxville) or streaming on WDVX.
12-26-09 There's a new EP! The Cranberry Fox EP will be released December 30 at my last Flipnotics show in Austin. This show will feature the delicious vocal stylings of Emily Peal and the drumming wonderment of Austin native Joe Beard. The Cranberry Fox was quite a whirlwind; start to finish (including writing) in three days. It is definitely projects like this that make me miss having other people to help out (as Samwise Gamgee so eloquently put it, "share the load"). The only thing that I'm waiting on right now is creating the art for this record. This should take place in the next day or so. Personally, I am very excited to share this with everyone, and I think it will make a very nice prelude to Whispering Earth, which should be finished by the end of January. It is now looking, consequently, like we'll have a summer release for. I'll keep you posted about any updates regarding that. As a final note, all of the Stars Regardless camp wish everyone a wonderful and safe end of this year and beginning of next year.
11-19-09 So its been awhile. Here is what is happening. Soon (but not too soon) we are migrating back to the north and to the east. Boston, once again, then ultimately to New York. This means some possible changes about the order of things. If Whispering Earth is finished, which I hope to God (or whomever) is finished, then we may have a release show in Austin, but it will definitely happen in New York. We're getting very close. Our friends are coming over for dinner, and once the goose is cooked, we'll all be gorging ourselves. I really think this one will be special. More later.
09-27-09 First, I learned that trees grow out of the toes of dead giants. I was unaware. The new record is getting to a point very close to what I would call "about a quarter of the way done." I've got about a dozen pieces, in various states of disassemblement, floating on my harddrive, ready to be finished and put into place. As much as I want to take this slowly, I just get so excited sometimes. Once the band (yes, there is sort of a band) learns some of this stuff, there is a good chance that shows will start happening. The mess that will ensue is sure to be a complete disaster, and one I am thoroughly looking forward to. In only slightly more time-sensitive news, we have the basic tracks recorded for an EP that will be out later in the fall. What makes it special is that it is the first record with instruments tracked simultaneously that I have done with this project. It is slow going currently, due to the fact that it was tracked in ProTools (which I try to avoid at all costs), and needs to be transferred into Logic. This is difficult to do however, considering the method in which these songs were tracked, and my limited knowledge of ProTools, and my extreme hatred of the twisted quasi-monopoly Digidesign thinks they have over the recording industry. But enough of that. I'll start a blog to rant about Digidesign, and will direct you to in the future. In other other news, the Fallen Oaks record is finished, but I've been too lazy to paint a cover piece for it. I might do that today, because it is hot, so I'm staying inside anyway. Addendum:The Fallen Oaks EP, "Here Lie" may be out incredibly soon. I'll keep you posted.
09-13-09 It seems as if all is finally good and well with this website, bar fonts and sizes and the little annoying things that keep me doing this for days and days on end. I'm going to try some style changes eventually to hopefully spice this up a little more. Style sheets and the like. Right now this looks fairly on par with the websites I used to make in middle school. Not that that is a bad thing. News: Show at Kick Butt: Airport tomorrow. 8-10pm. It will probably be my last show for awhile, so that I can work on the new recordings I have started. There are also a few EPs floating around that I will get around to releasing as soon as I have the energy for it. I'm missing a lot of artwork, which is not necessarily something I'm so very excited to do right now, so it will wait.
09-06-09 This is where the show starts. I've been in this new place a few months; living, breathing, thinking in an entirely new environment. My hands and forehead sweat. My body shivers from the shock of being so far from everyone, yet so immersed in this new place. Oh, its a lonely place. Here its too hot for things to grow. Only in a few months will I be able to see how it is coming along. We're working on a new record. It was, and then it wasn't, and now it might be again. It just comes so slowly, the sap from my winter brain, that I hardly think its mine. If this happens, it will be the best thing I've done. I'm so excited that I'll solve it and terrified that I'll break it.
In other news, I can be heard in various places around Austin currently. Check shows for that. Also, some new EPs in the coming months. I want to get all of this out, but I'm still getting used to the new studio setup, so it is coming slowly.
08-02-09 I'm curious as to how well this website works. The links are still nonfunctional, and since I have no idea what I'm doing as far as the code is concerned, it will be a good while before everything is working how I want it to. Such is the life, I guess.
In an attempt to see how well this text scrolls, I'm just going to keep writing and writing and writing.
12-21-08
